Global approach required for governance of AI

Seventy years ago, researchers began exploring the possibilities of artificial intelligence, reimagining the dynamics between humans and machines. Just over a year ago, generative AI was introduced to the public, sparking discussions on whether machines could truly think.

As AI continues to rapidly evolve, it is crucial that we work together to navigate its profound impact on the world. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UN Agency for Digital Technologies, has long been dedicated to assessing transformative technologies and their global implications.

The rapid advancements in AI have led to significant investments by big tech companies, but also raised concerns about misinformation, deepfakes, biases, and climate impacts. Additionally, a large portion of the global population remains disconnected from the Internet, limiting their access to AI technology.

Governments around the world are recognizing the need for regulation and are actively considering how to govern AI. While this regulatory response is a positive step towards a safe AI future, there is a risk of leaving some countries behind.

At the upcoming AI for Good Global Summit, leaders from various sectors will come together to address the challenges posed by AI and explore how AI can be used for the benefit of society. The UN is actively working to facilitate consensus building, capacity development, and international cooperation to address AI-related challenges and risks.

The focus of this year’s summit will be on implementing AI governance principles globally, with an emphasis on inclusivity, safety, transparency, and responsible development. International technical standards will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and ethical use of AI technology.

As we strive towards a global agreement on the responsible use of AI, it is essential that every country is involved in the conversation to ensure that AI truly becomes a force for good for everyone.
