Global Failure of CrowdStrike Security Update on Windows PCs

A major global outage affected systems using Microsoft Windows software, causing PCs to crash with a “blue screen of death”. Sky News, KLM, and other airlines were impacted, with some services now back online while others are still being fixed.

Microsoft 365 went offline due to a configuration change, impacting various Microsoft products and users worldwide, including governments and airlines. The root cause was identified as changes to Azure backend workloads, leading to connectivity failures affecting Microsoft 365 services.

CrowdStrike was reportedly involved in the configuration change, with a workaround provided for users experiencing issues loading Windows. IT technicians are working to resolve the outage manually, with efforts focused on halting the problematic update and ensuring systems are updated or rolled back as needed.

The incident underscores the risks of relying on a single point of failure and the importance of robust redundancy and disaster recovery plans for cloud services. While such outages are rare, they highlight vulnerabilities in global infrastructure and emphasize the need for continued vigilance in maintaining system stability.
