Government Receives 200 Proposals from Local Authorities Seeking AI Growth Zones in Their Regions

The UK government has received over 200 responses from local authorities eager to turn their areas into AI growth zones. In February, local councils were asked to show their interest in these zones, designed to support the infrastructure needed for AI development.

Culham in Oxfordshire has been confirmed as the UK’s first AI growth zone. This site, home to the UK Atomic Energy Authority, will also serve as a testing ground for sustainable energy options to power data-intensive AI operations.

The AI growth zones initiative was introduced in January 2025, part of the government’s 50-point AI Opportunities Action Plan, aimed at integrating AI technologies across the UK. These zones will have enhanced access to power and streamlined planning processes, allowing for quicker approvals.

The government is particularly focused on redeveloping de-industrialized areas. Potential sites must have access to at least 500MW of power, or local councils need to provide a solid plan to generate that amount.

To advance this initiative, the government is hosting an event on April 30, 2025, at TechUK in London. Local authorities will present their proposals to AI Minister Feryal Clark and Matt Clifford, the prime minister’s AI adviser. Investors and MPs will also attend, as the government outlines timelines and qualifying criteria. The selected areas for AI growth zones will be announced this summer.

Feryal Clark emphasized the significance of AI for future growth, stating, “Our AI growth zones will transform areas across the UK into engines of growth and opportunity.” She highlighted the aim to spread the benefits of AI throughout the regions, reinforcing the UK’s position as a leader in this technology.

Matt Clifford added that the UK has a remarkable opportunity in the AI sector, stressing the need for swift action. “Speed is everything,” he remarked, expressing eagerness to dive into discussions about these proposals as the UK seizes this once-in-a-generation chance.
