Half of Business IT Considered Obsolete

A recent survey by Kyndryl reveals that an overwhelming 94% of business leaders prioritize technology modernization. Yet, the reality check shows that nearly half—44%—of the critical IT infrastructure Kyndryl manages is nearing its end-of-life. This highlights a disconnect between intent and action.

The Kyndryl readiness report draws from insights provided by 3,200 senior leaders and decision-makers, along with data from Kyndryl Bridge, their AI-driven digital integration platform. A security leader from Kyndryl points out a pressing risk: obsolete technology is more prone to cyber attacks and may lead to significant outages. “Almost half of the world’s essential infrastructure isn’t resilient and needs an upgrade,” they stress.

Concerns run high among CEOs, with 64% acknowledging that their IT systems are either outdated or nearing end-of-life, which opens them up to vulnerabilities and skills shortages. Additionally, 71% of executives admit their infrastructure isn’t fully prepared for AI integration. Only about 30% feel confident in leading their tech modernization efforts to harness innovative technologies effectively. Most leaders—71%—find themselves at the early stages of this journey.

Survey participants revealed that 56% are adopting new digital technologies, while 15% are just getting started. When it comes to managing external business risks, leaders identified upgrading IT infrastructure as their top focus.

Looking at automation, Kyndryl Bridge suggests that currently, only 8% of IT issues are resolved through automation alone. However, Kyndryl believes this could rise to 30%, potentially saving companies billions in maintenance costs while reducing downtime.

Expanding the focus, 65% of those surveyed are worried about cyber attacks, but only 30% feel prepared to handle them. Similarly, 59% are concerned about climate and environmental disruptions, yet just 25% think their systems are equipped to respond effectively.

Cybersecurity vulnerabilities are rated as the top challenge by 56% of those polled, while 53% regard the pace of innovation as a significant hurdle. Additionally, 52% highlight the integration of new or emerging technologies as a major risk.

Martin Schroeter, CEO of Kyndryl, emphasizes the need for readiness across all levels. It’s about empowering people, aligning tools with culture, and navigating the complexities of digital transformation throughout the organization.
