Increase in Data Scientist Recruitment at HMRC

According to information obtained through a Freedom of Information request, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has significantly increased its spending on data science expertise over the past three financial years. The analysis conducted by the Parliament Street think tank shows that the number of HMRC employees with data-related job titles, such as data scientists and data analysts, has increased from 919 in 2022 to 1,279 in 2024, with a corresponding rise in total salary expenditure.

An HMRC spokesperson highlighted the importance of data scientists in helping the department utilize data effectively through technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning. With one of the largest stores of data in the UK, HMRC has been actively recruiting data scientists and AI experts to enhance its data capabilities.

Scott Lewis, a senior vice-president for Ataccama, emphasized the significance of AI in maximizing the value of HMRC’s new data staff. He stressed the need for investing in skills development and career progression for data scientists to ensure their retention and effectiveness in utilizing technology advancements.

Furthermore, efforts to address the skills shortage in data science are underway, with the government funding postgraduate conversion courses in AI and data science to train individuals from diverse backgrounds in these areas. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between the demand for data specialists and the available talent pool, ultimately strengthening the UK’s expertise in data science and AI.
