Lumen Secures Terrestrial Backhaul Agreement for JUNO Trans-Pacific Cable

Undersea cables handle over 99% of international data traffic, but a strong terrestrial network is essential for smooth data flow across continents. To support the high-capacity JUNO Trans-Pacific cable linking Japan and the US, Lumen Technologies is stepping in with vital terrestrial backhaul connectivity.

Operated by Seren Juno Network Co, the JUNO cable stretches 10,000 kilometers and can deliver up to 350 Tbps across 20 fiber pairs, thanks to advanced Space Division Multiplexing technology. This project responds to the skyrocketing demand for data driven by 5G, the Internet of Things, edge computing, and artificial intelligence. With existing cables between Japan and the US nearing capacity early in the decade, JUNO fills the gap for increasing global internet bandwidth.

On May 30, 2025, JUNO officially achieved its ready-for-service status, completing terrestrial backhaul connectivity on both sides of the Pacific. Seren aims to provide fast and reliable network services for major technology companies, OTT platforms, and telecommunications carriers by bolstering the telecommunications landscape in both regions. As a result, businesses in Japan and the US will gain significant benefits from the increased bandwidth and dependable connections.

JUNO’s cable system and Lumen’s terrestrial network will connect Asia and North America, supporting next-gen applications and allowing businesses to thrive in the digital economy with agility. Strong terrestrial backhaul is crucial for connecting to cloud regions, edge computing sites, and major data centers.

Lumen’s dark fiber backhaul will offer JUNO customized private network configurations. This fiber network will transport traffic from the cable’s US landing point in Grover Beach, California, to key points of presence in San Jose and Los Angeles, transforming business operations in both countries. This connection allows data to reach major cloud hubs, data centers, and enterprise networks throughout the US.

“Our partnership with Lumen is key to realizing JUNO’s vision for trans-Pacific data transport,” said Yoshio Sato, CEO of Seren Juno Network Co. “Lumen’s extensive reach and expertise in high-capacity fiber infrastructure make it the perfect partner for bringing the world closer through digital innovation.”

Lumen also expressed commitment to supporting this initiative, with Ashley Haynes-Gaspar, executive vice president and chief revenue officer, noting that their dark fiber solution enables rapid deployment to meet JUNO’s timeline. The robust fiber backbone facilitates seamless, high-capacity transport from Asia into the US digital economy, meeting the demands of global enterprises and cloud providers focused on AI and data-driven advancements.
