At the start of Microsoft’s Ignite conference in Chicago, CEO Satya Nadella took the stage to talk about the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence. He pointed out that AI’s capabilities are now doubling every six months, a significant acceleration compared to the previous norm, which followed Moore’s Law with a doubling every 18 months.
Nadella believes this rapid scaling will lead to a new way of thinking about AI. He highlighted three important shifts in technology. First, he introduced the idea of a universal multimodal interface. This allows for seamless interaction using speech, images, and videos, making input and output more versatile.
Next, he talked about advancements in reasoning and planning capabilities. This involves a new form of “neural algebra,” which helps tackle complex problems and uncover patterns among people, places, and things. It even allows users to explore relationships in new ways.
Finally, he mentioned a new approach that incorporates “long-term memory-rich context.” By integrating these elements, Nadella envisions a sophisticated network of AI agents that can operate on our behalf in various aspects of our lives, from work to personal tasks.
As the conference kicked off, Microsoft shared previews of their new AI features. One highlight is Copilot Actions, which lets Microsoft 365 users automate routine tasks simply by using prompts.
They also introduced new AI agents for Microsoft 365. For instance, a natural language assistant for SharePoint helps users quickly find and query content. Another agent for Teams offers real-time speech-to-speech interpretation during meetings, even allowing participants to use a simulation of their own voice.
There’s also an agent designed for employee self-service, part of the Microsoft 365 Copilot Business Chat. This tool streamlines responses to common HR-related questions, helping employees understand their benefits or request equipment like new laptops. Organizations can customize it in Copilot Studio to fit their specific needs.
Other agents currently available take real-time meeting notes in Teams and automate project management tasks in Planner.
For developers, Microsoft introduced the Azure AI Foundry. This platform gives businesses access to all existing Azure AI services while also offering new features. A key component is the Azure AI Foundry software developer’s kit, which aims to unify the creation, customization, and management of AI applications and agents.
Microsoft describes the Azure AI Foundry as providing enterprise-level control and customization. It includes 25 prebuilt app templates and integrates seamlessly with tools like GitHub, Visual Studio, and Copilot Studio.
