Centranet has taken a big leap forward by rolling out Nokia technology, becoming the first company to showcase a 50Gbps fiber internet connection for the Sac and Fox Nation in Oklahoma. This isn’t just a trial run; it’s a significant step towards providing some of the fastest internet speeds available anywhere, not just in the U.S.
As part of this live commercial trial, Centranet has used Nokia’s Lightspan fiber solution to connect a member of the tribe, marking the first real-world test of 50G passive optical network technology in a tribal nation. Nokia sees this as a clear indication of how their fiber access platform can help communities of all sizes bolster their broadband capabilities, especially in areas that have been historically underserved.
Randle Carter, the principal chief of the Sac and Fox Nation, emphasized the need for this initiative, stating their aim to secure grants that would enhance fiber optic access for their community, not just for today but looking into the future as well. With the Lightspan MF fiber solution, Centranet is enabling current users to enjoy multi-gigabit speeds and future-proofing with upcoming 50G PON services. This technology is essential for online education, telehealth, and other digital services that are crucial today.
Mark Prather, president of fiber and technology at Centranet, highlighted their commitment to building infrastructure for the communities they serve. Over the past three years, they’ve installed 3,300 miles of fiber across north-central Oklahoma. “Bringing high-speed broadband to the Sac and Fox Nation and underserved areas isn’t just about technology. It’s about making sure everyone has access to the tools they need to thrive in today’s digital world,” he said.
Mark Klimek, vice president of North American business at Nokia, pointed out that their fiber platform can accommodate a range of PON technologies, which allows for flexibility in meeting changing network needs. This partnership with Centranet is about ensuring access to cutting-edge technology for communities that have often been overlooked.
While Centranet and Nokia make strides in Oklahoma, Nokia is also expanding its collaboration with Furukawa Electric LatAm to enhance datacenter automation in Brazil. Since 2022, they’ve been working together to bring advanced passive optical network technologies to the Latin American market. Nokia’s offerings include robust datacenter switching platforms and automation solutions, aiming to equip businesses with the technology they need to thrive.
