Research suggests that a lack of skills is leading to setbacks in AI technology.

Research from Expereo and IDC has revealed that skills shortages are hindering firms’ progress towards artificial intelligence (AI) goals. In the UK, 37% of firms are struggling to retain AI, automation, and data talent, impacting their AI plans.

Due to talent shortages, firms are competing to retain and recruit new talent, leading to difficulties in finding skilled individuals. As CEO of Expereo, Ben Elms emphasized the need for CIOs to keep up with market innovations and adopt AI responsibly.

External technology partners are also facing challenges in supporting AI implementation, with 29% of CIOs expressing concerns about their partners’ capabilities in this area. The lack of AI skills is a common issue in the sector, with reports highlighting the shortage of skills.

The government has allocated funding to address the skills gap in AI, including investments in training programs and scholarships. However, firms are also grappling with the impact of AI on their operations, especially in the context of remote working.

CIOs are working towards overcoming challenges related to employee use of AI tools and providing training to ensure appropriate use. Proper training and skills development are seen as key in addressing governance and ethics concerns around AI technologies.

Despite these challenges, CIOs are optimistic about the potential of AI initiatives, with a majority ready to embrace the AI revolution. Only a small percentage of firms in the UK are not prepared for the advancements in AI at this time.
