SASE milestone asserted by MEF association

MEF, a global consortium of network, cloud, security, and technology providers dedicated to accelerating enterprise digital transformation, has announced certifications for the first module of its Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) products and services certification program. Technology firms Broadcom, Fortinet, and Versa have achieved these certifications.

Enterprises worldwide are turning to software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) platforms to facilitate digital transformation, adapt to changing workforce needs, and migrate to the cloud. MEF recognizes the benefits of SD-WAN, such as improved application performance, centralized management, optimized connectivity, agility, security, and cost savings. As a crucial component of SASE, SD-WAN is now closely integrated with cybersecurity offerings to protect distributed environments.

MEF believes that SASE services will play a vital role in Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) offerings. NaaS allows service providers to offer standardized services that include on-demand connectivity, application assurance, cybersecurity, and multi-cloud services to help enterprises achieve business goals without managing their own infrastructure.

The SASE certification program consists of three modules – SD-WAN, Security Service Edge (SSE), and Zero Trust – which must be completed successfully to achieve SASE certification. The program aims to build market confidence by validating reliable technology and managed service outcomes. It also offers a subscription-based testing model for technology and service providers to continually improve certification scores and provide confidence in cybersecurity products.

MEF’s partnership with CyberRatings.org (CRO) ensures transparency and confidence in cybersecurity products and services. Technology provider testing is based on compliance with MEF standards and methodologies developed by CRO, with MEF issuing a report card based on the test results.

The certification program, currently available to MEF members, will be expanded to include WAN certification with full SASE certification expected by Q4 2024. Palo Alto Networks is set to achieve its SD-WAN certification alongside Broadcom, Fortinet, and Versa. This milestone demonstrates MEF’s commitment to validating secure, high-performing networks for enterprises undergoing digital transformation.
