Qualcomm kicked off the Snapdragon Summit 2024 with a bold vision for AI-driven experiences across mobile, PC, and augmented reality devices. CEO Cristiano Amon opened the event by highlighting how technology will adapt to users, not the other way around. “It’s awe inspiring,” he said, noting how quickly reality can shift and become personal and powerful.
Amon emphasized the rapid advancements Qualcomm has made over the past year, particularly with the Oryon CPU, which is now in its second generation. He mentioned how Qualcomm has been at the forefront of the wireless industry and is transforming into a connected computing company focused on new AI processing. “We’ve just started,” he noted, pointing to the company’s shift towards creating platforms that spur innovation not just in mobile, but in sectors like automotive and PC as well.
He shared insights into the company’s journey, explaining how Snapdragon began as a platform for mobile innovation but quickly expanded into automotive with the Snapdragon Digital Chassis. Now, the Snapdragon X Elite is set to redefine the PC industry. Amon declared that every new market Qualcomm enters will see it setting the pace for innovation.
Amon also addressed the transformative impact of AI, especially generative AI, on computing experiences. “Computers can understand human language now,” he explained, predicting a major shift in how we interact with technology. He anticipates that applications will evolve dramatically as AI becomes an integral part of functionalities across devices.
Alex Katouzian, the group’s general manager, echoed this sentiment, stating that a multi-device world is becoming a reality with more intuitive and responsive interfaces. He believes that high performance and extended battery life are essential for this new AI-driven era.
Katouzian introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite mobile platform as the foundation for this future, describing it as the fastest mobile CPU to date. With innovations like the second-generation Oryon CPU, Adreno GPU, and enhanced Hexagon NPU, Qualcomm aims to empower personalized and multi-modal AI experiences right on devices.
Strategic partnerships play a key role in this evolution. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella noted how AI at the edge is gaining significance and praised Qualcomm’s collaboration in developing hardware and software tools. Together, they’re striving to enhance productivity and creativity across devices.
Amon also discussed Qualcomm’s partnership with Meta, which is venturing into mixed reality. The two companies are working closely to create AI-first experiences, leveraging Meta’s advancements in their devices. Mark Zuckerberg highlighted the potential of running AI models like Llama directly on Snapdragon devices, enabling richer and more responsive user experiences.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman remarked on the considerable changes since the launch of ChatGPT, emphasizing the need for AI models that understand language, images, and sounds in real time. He described ongoing enhancements that aim to create intelligent assistants capable of tackling complex tasks.
Amon noted how on-device AI ensures privacy while enhancing user experiences. He expressed excitement about the merge of cloud and on-device AI, envisioning a future where powerful tools are accessible to more people, boosting productivity and creativity in businesses.
He concluded with a firm belief in the potential of this technology to transform the landscape. “The best of technology is still ahead,” he stated, focusing on Qualcomm’s role in bringing tomorrow’s experiences to life today.
