SP Energy Networks Enhances Operational Telecommunications Network in Scotland

SP Energy Networks (SPEN) has just kicked off a four-year partnership with Vodafone to boost its operational telecom services. This move aims to make the electricity transmission and distribution networks in Scotland more resilient and respond to faults more quickly.

SPEN, the networks division of ScottishPower, serves 3.5 million homes and businesses across Central and Southern Scotland, North Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire, and North Shropshire. With Vodafone’s technology and expertise, SPEN plans to strengthen its network, cope with increasing energy demands, and transition to cleaner energy sources. This upgrade is all about enhancing network resilience, managing existing assets, and integrating more renewable energy into the grid.

Paul Garston, SPEN’s head of smart grid operations, highlighted the significance of their grid enhancement, saying, “We’re delivering the biggest upgrade our grid has ever seen, ensuring our electricity network supports a cleaner and greener future for us all.” He expressed excitement about working with Vodafone to modernize their operational telecom infrastructure, ensuring it serves customers and communities effectively for years.

Vodafone will modernize the telecom systems that control SPEN’s extensive network, which includes 19,500 substations, 23,000 kilometers of overhead lines, and 41,000 kilometers of underground cables. This network is vital for supplying electricity to around two million homes and businesses in central and southern Scotland. Vodafone will also deliver fixed, mobile, and satellite connectivity, along with routine maintenance to help address any faults quickly and safely.

Tom Stockwell, head of key accounts at Vodafone UK, expressed confidence in their ability to assist SPEN with their digital goals. “We have a strong track-record in helping our energy customers, and we are delighted that SPEN has selected us as its trusted partner,” he said. He emphasized that this collaboration is not just about future-proofing but also about using connectivity to enhance networks for everyone—consumers, businesses, and the environment.

Additionally, Vodafone is preparing for a big step forward with its merger with Three UK, which will enable the launch of a nationwide 5G network in Scotland. This includes a £11 billion investment aimed at bringing 5G Standalone coverage to 89% of the country.

Vodafone has been busy rolling out mobile connectivity in Scotland, expanding 5G coverage in major cities, airports, and universities, and enhancing 4G coverage in rural areas through the Shared Rural Network (SRN) initiative.

The SPEN deal aligns with Vodafone’s sustainability goals. Recently, they announced a collaboration with Ericsson that cut daily power consumption of 5G Radio Units by up to 33% in London trials. This initiative utilized Ericsson’s AI and machine learning solutions, aimed at optimizing energy use while maintaining high performance, ultimately reducing operating costs and carbon emissions.
