Jobs that require technical skills are often more stable than other positions because of their consistent demand. Research from LiveCareer reveals some interesting trends. In the first half of 2024, analysis of over 300,000 CVs showed that, on average, UK workers change jobs every 2.6 years. However, certain tech roles, like robotics engineers and Java programmers, see less turnover and offer greater job security.

Patrycja Mazurczak, a writer for the Professional Association of Resume Writers and Career Coaches, points out that in tech, job hopping is quite common—and even seen as a smart career move. Many, particularly younger workers, shift jobs every few years to secure better pay, tackle new challenges, and work with cutting-edge technology.

While there are risks to frequent job changes—like appearing uncommitted—Mazurczak emphasizes that many tech professionals view it as an effective way to advance their skills. The key is to find the right balance aligned with one’s career goals.

LiveCareer also notes that a mix of low unemployment and a culture that accepts shorter job tenures contributes to frequent job changes. The hiring landscape in tech has been unpredictable over the last five years. During the pandemic, the demand for IT professionals surged as people turned to technology to adapt to working from home. This was followed by the “great resignation,” when many tech workers sought new opportunities.

With ongoing skills shortages in tech, hiring remains competitive, and employers have become more accepting of employees changing jobs frequently. This behavior, once frowned upon, is now seen as normal in a tech environment where specific skills are crucial for competitiveness.

Interestingly, programmers—often regarded as a stable profession—typically change jobs every three years. LiveCareer found that, despite having an average of six years of experience, programmers usually hold just two jobs during that time. Other technical roles tend to be moderately stable, with workers often switching jobs based on demand or promotional opportunities.

Management positions, especially in operational roles, also fall into this category, as professionals frequently seek new challenges to further their careers. Overall, while technology offers prospects for long-term stability, the industry’s ever-evolving nature encourages many to shift roles to stay up-to-date with the latest skills and trends.
