The UK’s financial regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), is teaming up with Nvidia to create a safe space for finance companies to explore artificial intelligence (AI). They call it the Supercharged Sandbox.

In this setup, firms will get hands-on access to cutting-edge AI tools. The idea was first shared back in April when the FCA announced plans to let firms test AI applications before rolling them out to the public. Any financial firm eager to innovate can join in. They’ll have access to valuable data, technical expertise, and regulatory guidance to help speed up their efforts.

Jessica Rusu, the FCA’s chief data officer, emphasized that this collaboration is crucial for firms wanting to test AI but lacking the resources. She believes it will help harness AI for the good of markets and consumers, promoting economic growth.

Nvidia’s Jochen Papenbrock pointed out that AI is transforming finance by automating tasks, improving data analysis, and enhancing decision-making. In the FCA’s environment, companies can play with AI innovations using Nvidia’s powerful computing platform.

More firms are adopting AI. A recent Bank of England survey found that 41% of finance companies use AI to streamline internal processes. Meanwhile, 26% are tapping into AI for better customer support. Sarah Breeden, a deputy governor at the Bank of England, noted that many companies have turned to AI to combat risks like cyberattacks and fraud. The survey also revealed that 16% of firms are using AI for credit risk assessments, with another 19% planning to do so soon. Eleven percent are engaged in algorithmic trading, and 9% aim to explore that in the next three years.

Steve Morgan from Pegasystems highlighted that allowing firms to experiment with AI in a controlled environment makes sense, particularly given the costs involved. However, he cautioned that no institution will deploy AI without ensuring its accuracy. A fraud detection system that gets it right 95% of the time still leaves room for errors, which could lead to significant financial and reputational damage.

Morgan stressed that AI tools need the same level of scrutiny as traditional methods to ensure responsible lending decisions. The best way to achieve this is to govern and monitor AI processes closely, tying them into existing workflows and ensuring they adhere to clear standards.
