UK government pledges £8.5m in funding for AI safety research

The UK government has announced plans to provide £8.5m in grants for artificial intelligence (AI) safety research. The grants will be awarded to researchers studying how to protect society from risks associated with AI, such as deepfakes and cyber attacks. The overall research programme will be led by the UK’s AI Safety Institute (AISI), in collaboration with UK Research and Innovation and the Alan Turing Institute. The programme will also aim to collaborate with other global AI safety institutes. The government also intends to broaden the AISI’s remit to include the field of “systemic AI safety” to understand the impacts of AI at a societal level. The grant programme is open to researchers based in the UK, with a focus on encouraging collaboration with researchers from around the world.
