Updated NHS App: A Key Solution for Addressing Waiting Lists

The government is rolling out an upgraded NHS app as part of its plan to tackle NHS waiting times. This new version will let patients choose their care providers, book appointments in various settings, and get test results—all through a single app.

Amanda Pritchard, the chief executive of NHS, emphasized the potential of the app: “We’re giving patients more information, choice, and control over their care. This also frees up our staff so they can focus on what matters most.” By leveraging technology and increasing access to tests and scans close to home, the plan aims to shorten waiting times and empower patients in their elective care decisions.

The rollout comes in response to the issue of missed appointments, which create significant delays in patient care. The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) pointed out that sending appointment reminders can cut missed appointments by up to 80%. With the app upgrades, patients can easily view and manage their non-emergency appointments at their convenience. They’ll also have the option to select from a range of providers, including independent ones, and book diagnostic tests at convenient locations, like Community Diagnostic Centres inside shopping centers.

Additionally, the NHS is piloting an AI system designed to identify patients more likely to miss their appointments. This system will offer support, like free transport, to those who need it most. The app will also speed up how patients receive their test results. Instead of waiting for a call or a letter, patients can access their results directly through the app and book follow-up consultations—either virtual or in-person—without unnecessary delays.

Wes Streeting, the Health and Social Care secretary, underscored the reform’s ambition: “We’re transforming the NHS into a modern service that puts patients first. Our goal is to cut waiting times from 18 months down to 18 weeks, ensuring that everyone—regardless of their background—gets the same level of choice and convenience in their healthcare.”
